Cyan Michaels, Author of Twisty Psychological Thrillers
After a few detours as a graphic designer, webmistress, painter, and rock singer, Cyan is now focused on writing novels that examine the fragile, resilient, and twisted parts of the human mind. (Honestly, most of us are barely held together with emotional duct tape!)
She enjoys reading psychological and domestic thrillers, sci-fi, spec fic, and bizarro comedy fiction. Cyan lives in southern Ontario in that beautiful little town by the river, with a cute guitarist husband and not quite enough house plants.
Why do I write thrillers?
Well, to be honest, I probably shouldn’t! I have anxiety. Looking around my desk right now, I can think of a dozen things that could kill me. My mind is constantly spinning worst case scenarios. Also, horror movies scare me – I have to watch them from behind a pillow or my fingers. I can’t handle gore, so I usually avoid them completely. But thrilling stories tweak my demented brain in an interesting way, so apparently I’m writing them.
What is in my books?
A woman who finds herself at a turning point in her life. A sudden situation that feels too big for her, but she’s going to tackle it anyway. A ticking clock. Short chapters. Quick pacing. A touch of wacky / snarky humor, even when things seem dark. Things that must be impossible… until they aren’t. Twists and turns and “what the @#$!” moments. A satisfying ending that makes you think about it days later.
What is NOT in my books?
S*x, gore, excessive swearing.
Hey - once in a blue moon, you really need to call an a-hole an a-hole. If you’re okay with the occasional use of the word “bitch”, and a rare “shit”, or “what the hell?” you won’t be too offended. Overall, not too much cussin’.
Zero “bedroom time” scenes, although it might be mentioned in a vague comment that certain people were in the bedroom together. There might be the odd kiss or cuddle, but nothing rated higher than PG 13.
No children or animals will be harmed in the present. (Who knows what may have happened to human characters in the past?)
No heavily detailed blood and gore. I’ll let your sick little imagination either fill that in or gloss over it, as you like.
What am I working on now?
Stuff. Things. Something spooky happening in the woods. You know, the usual.
There are several ideas that I’m considering for my next book. If I make a decision quickly, do I deserve $100 worth of houseplants from the seriously amazing online shop? And how do I make a poll so that you nice people can approve of this questionable decision?
Okay, but what about YOU?
Er… I write books. Drink tea. Walk around. Spend too much at the incredible organic chocolate stand at the farmer’s market. Maybe when I have a thousand followers in my Facebook Group I’ll do an “Ask Me Anything” afternoon or something. Somebody please remind me about that, my memory is…. ooh, is that a cardinal out back?
The number one coolest thing you could do in the universe is to give to your local food bank.
The second coolest thing is to join my email list to stay in touch and hear about new book launches. (It’s super easy to unsubscribe if you change your mind.) Messages will be minimal. Mega important stuff only. (Like if I get a great photo of that cardinal.)
Please subscribe to the monthly-ish email list and make my day – thank you!!!
Thank you for subscribing!
Have a great day!
